P1C: NEIGHBOURHOOD
LEARNING CENTRE
Architectural Design lV
The objectives of this project:
-
Identify and analyse environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site and apply ideas of environmental sustainability.
-
Design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context (harness environmental qualities of the site to inform design) which impact on users’ experiences.
-
Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history, and socio-cultural events), and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context.
-
Establish an appropriate level of understanding of materiality and detailing as means to capture experiential qualities of the design.
-
Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology.
Task
The project calls for the design of a Neighbourhood Park and Kebun Komuniti within a suburban neighbourhood of USJ 14. Students are required to provide full design proposals incorporating findings from contextual response and precedent studies. Students will generate narratives that respond to the environment and community within the given context and explore environmental poetics of building enclosure’s design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing various complex typologies of spatial organisations and a variety of passive strategies for sustainable design. The design should contribute to and merge harmoniously with environment and site and provide the best of spatial experiences in fostering a sense of community. The final submission is including a 6 A1 poster.
PROGRESS OUTCOME
Imagine a vibrant community hub nestled within the USJ 14 Urban Farm, a haven for low-income mothers and a beacon of environmental consciousness. That's the vision behind the USJ 14 Kebun Komuniti Center, a project entrusted to students who will delve deep into site analysis and precedent studies to craft a design that resonates with the environment and the people it serves.
Sustainability is at the core of this project. Students will explore environmentally conscious building enclosure designs that minimize the center's footprint, seamlessly blending the structure with the surrounding landscape. Diverse spatial layouts and passive strategies will harness the power of nature, creating a space that breathes and thrives alongside the community it fosters.
Ultimately, the USJ 14 Kebun Komuniti Center aspires to be more than just a building. It aims to be a beating heart, drawing people together and nurturing a sense of belonging within this unique urban farm. Through thoughtful design and a deep understanding of the community's needs, students have the chance to create a space that empowers, inspires, and celebrates the spirit of USJ 14.
DESIGN CONCEPT
After deriving into concept, went through some research in some precedent on how a urban farming learning center could be and how a kebun komuniti could be. After extracting elements from the precedent that is most suitable for my design and implementing on test models.
INTERIM
My design is too attract people by connecting the main road to the park view. and by have people spend more time in the centralized courtyard to connect people and a meet up point for the users. After a day in the learning center gives put a different experience and also at night gives out a different experience at the courtyard.

TAYLOR’S GRADUATE CAPABILITIES
Studio IV taught me to how to create poetic expressions at different spatial typologies which can bring an impact on the users. This module also taught me how to conduct critical site analysis virtually, by collecting tangible and intangible information with 5 senses; which i think it is as crucial as researching before designing. Honestly, I think the largest obstacle for me was the online tutorial because I find it harder to communicate my idea through online and the time limitation makes it more challenging so studio IV definitely made me work harder throughout the whole semester.
