THE DISCOVERY CENTER
(GENIUS LOCI)
Architectural Design lll
The objectives of this project:
-
To Generate design through conscious consideration of spatial typologies, section-plan relationship, contextual conditions
and considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality, and textures. -
Document, interpret and analyze the physical conditions of the site and ‘genius loci’ of place and generate design based
on the character and conditions of the site context.
Task
Through this project, I explored architectural response within the context of the site and programmatic requirements of an interpretive centre. The purpose was to showcase interpretive material related to the context/place. Emphasis was given to design resolution integrating site, program and spatial poetics.
PROGRESS OUTCOME
Site Visit
The 'genius loci' of a place is the meaning of the place which is influenced by society, culture, history, memory and the landscape. In Project 2, we have to response architecturally towards the sense of place with a strong engagement and relationship to the site and programmatic requirements. Project 2A requires a thorough analysis of the site context. A site analysis provides parameters to suggest architectural solutions that are suitable for the place and fits its soul, whilst contributing to its context. The site needs to be understood, intuitively and quantitatively. Personal interpretation of the place is needed.
Our given macrosite was Discovery Center (aka visitor center) in Kampung Morten, Malacca. Therefore, the organized site visit we did that is planned for three (3) days and two (2) night.
FINAL OUTCOME
TASK 01
We have to do a historical research on the site, which includes mapping it over a series of significant stages, providing a description of the life and memory of the site, which in turn provides inspiration for a contemporary idea that connects directly with the history of the site.
An in-depth historical background of the macrosite is presented present it in the form of diagrams together with the site analysis.
TASK 02
We conducted a site analysis of the physical context within the identified Macro and Micro sites, on the tangible and untangible elements of the site. We have to produce a set of site analysis diagrams on our chosen micro site.
TASK 03
We then come out with proper scale site measurement plan and its adjacent
surroundings, the specific site and its boundary, the site sections with levels and to produce a site model 1:500.
TASK 04A
We were required to extract the intangible & tangible factors (people,
place, culture, and history) in 2 visceral board.
TASK 04B
This individual task required to produce 3 best view of the site, 3 elements around the site, 3 abstract artwork and 3 serial view of drawing which capture feelings, memory of the place, mood, vistas, visuals, senses, personal interpretation, or any “modifying
elements”.
TASK 05
Present the conclusion, interpretation, significant issues, the genius loci of the place and crucial site consideration
REFLECTION
TAYLOR’S GRADUATE CAPABILITIES
Second project had me learning about new aspects of architecture.
In this assignment, the chosen site, presents unique challenges that must be carefully considered in the design process. These considerations have led me to develop solutions and incorporate detailing that not only address these challenges but also transform them into distinctive and visually appealing features of my structure. I have created design solutions that not only address the disadvantages but also turn them into captivating and standout features of the tropical sanctuary.
During the course of this assignment, to foster a harmonious and efficient working environment within our team, we made the decision to go through each stage of the project together. This collaborative approach involved collectively planning, scheduling, sketching, modeling, and arranging the presentation boards. This cohesive teamwork allowed for effective communication, minimized confusion, and promoted a sense of unity and shared responsibility among team members.
