CONTEXTUAL STUDY SKETCH JOURNAL
OF A TRADITIONAL STREET
Theories of Asian Architecture
The objectives of this project:
-
To demonstrate understanding of place contexts and how they construct the place identity and socio-cultural meanings
Task
In this assignment, we are required to choose a street from the given locations and conduct research. We gather information through online research and site visits to understand the street's characteristics, architecture, and cultural significance. The collected data is then organized into physical and non-physical contexts, covering elements such as religious buildings, shop houses, local market, traditional trades, local cuisines, historical events, and social institutions. Finally, we compile our research into an eight-page manually drawn sketch journal, capturing the essence of the street through sketches, diagrams, and written explanations.

During my on-site visit, I verified the information gathered and conducted interviews with residents and shop owners on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee to ensure the accuracy and currency of my data.
In addition to external sources, I contributed my own observations, analysis, and thoughts after conducting extensive research on the architectural history of the street. This comprehensive approach allowed me to develop a well-rounded understanding of Jalan Tun H.S. Lee and present a rich and insightful final outcome.
