Advanced Architectural Construction

The objectives of this project:

To encourage analytical and critical study of the principles, practices and details of building technology in the student’s own design.
To encourage students to consider the construction aspects throughout the design process.
To adapt and implement the alternative construction systems into the students’ design.

Task

This assignment is aligned with the Studio Design Project (semester 4) and aims to facilitate students in the technical studies and development of their design. It deals with the analysis and establishment of the structural and the envelope systems of the student’s design to ensure that the design has logical and workable construction systems.

PROGRESS OUTCOME

I conducted some precedent studies of construction systems to be applied in the design including:

-The roof system

-2 facade systems

-The structural system + floor system

I conducted a thorough study on all the systems and presented my findings in the form of writing and sketches and accompanied by images from the precedent studies.

Then, using the similar systems as the ones in the case studies, I produced 2 alternative façade design schemes, including the front and the rear façades.

In this task, I produced a detailed sectional perspective drawing of 2 interesting spaces in my design; which consists of a space on the ground floor and a space on the top floor. .

FINAL OUTCOME

In this project, I had to analyse and document construction methods and materials, besides evaluating existing construction system and detailing of the precedent studies. Through this project, I sharpened my skills as I had to generate alternative construction solutions by means of sketches and drawings. I realised it is important to critique issues pertaining to construction principles, materials, techniques, codes of practice, process of assembly, and detailing.

REFLECTION

TAYLOR’S GRADUATE CAPABILITIES

Throughout the process, I have understood even more about construction methods, materials, and details of building components through precedent studies. At the same time, I was introduced to façade system and learned the construction method of façade system of a building. It is really interesting to know the method of construction and how components are joined together in a building.

I have been learning independently after attending lectures and every tutorial session. I frequently asked for feedback from my tutor through online platforms despite being in this period.
