FINAL DESIGN PRESENTATION & REPORT
Architectural Design Project (ADP)
The objectives of this project:
-
To consolidate an understanding of the holistic nature of the architectural design process, to a given degree of detail, with emphasis on design as an integrative process, drawing as appropriate on previous subjects of the program.

Task
The weeks following the submission of Project 1B calls for the finalisation of the Urban Room. At this stage, we are to finalise the overall design, while ensuring the implementation of appropriate construction methods and sustainable design strategies, ensuring a fully resolved and functional Urban Room, or Urban Canvas in my case.
FINAL OUTCOME
My final project for the Architectural Design Project is an urban canvas called Temporal Art Mechanism, which fuses creative and recreational spaces to enhance the artistic community of George Town, Penang itself translates to temporary derived from open parking lot site, which is clearly no longer what the area is known for, Temporal Mechanism shaped by time, rhythm, and memory. The site, like a lonely island tucked between heritage and development, once pulsed with life at Sia Boey - the main gear that drove George Town’s growth toward Komtar. Inspired by clockwork, the architecture revolves around a central atrium that sets surrounding spaces in motion, just as Sia Boey once moved the city. Each space reflects changing rhythms, transitions, and temporary cycles. The building becomes a spatial clock, turning fragments of the city’s past and present into an experience of motion, connection, and renewal.

REFLECTION
TAYLOR’S GRADUATE CAPABILITIES
The Architectural Design Project in itself was a way to define everything that I have learnt in the past three years of my architectural degree. There were times during the Architectural Design Project when the design process felt like I was doing it from memory, from what I have learnt and have already familiarised myself with but there will always be struggles and obstacles in a new project with a new site and project brief, which there certainly was for this project.

This project was truly a challenge, in the sense that the Urban Room we had to design was a full-fledged stand-alone building, where we were provided with a full site to work with, including the application of construction, sustainable design, landscape design and UBBL by-laws. My tutor emphasised the aspect that our Urban Room must be able to respond to all sides of the site, which was part of the challenge for ADP.

My experience in the Architectural Design Project certainly had a lot happening. Among formulating my design based on site analysis and theories, I also had to do my own reading of space planning for new ideas, as well as finding precedent studies for materiality and construction studies, on top of sustainable design strategies and the UBBL to ensure I was implementing the appropriate features and aspects into my design.

I can say I learnt so much in the Architectural Design Project. All the lecturers and tutors have given me new perspectives on architectural design and related aspects, alternate ways to look at how I design and process. I will always be grateful to all the help I was given by my tutor, my assessors, the lectures and my peers.
Many speakers and lecturers have mentioned that the learning does not stop after university and I can certainly continue to keep learning after the Architectural Design Project.
